The New Pornographers return with more of the same dense, intricate, crowd-pleasing power-pop that drenched their last LP, 2010’s ‘Together’.
The sonic template remains the same: 13 tracks boasting lush arrangements and soaring melodies, meshed together by inspired wordplay from principal singer-songwriter AC Newman. Songs tend towards the furiously upbeat (as per the title track) or mid-tempo numbers undercut with a thin vein of melancholy (see the glorious ‘Champions Of Red Wine’).
‘Brill Bruisers’ should finally see the band obtain the commercial success to match the critical acclaim they’ve accrued over the course of their last five LPs, as this is an almost perfect soundtrack to what’s left of the summer.
